Starts Watch: Final 1996 Permits
Residential building permits totaled 1,425,016 housing units in 1996 according to the
Final 1996 C40 Housing Units Authorized by Building Permit report issued by the US
Census Bureau. This is a 6.9% increase from the 1995 total of 1,332,549 units.
We have analyzed the starts information by state in a series of tables and maps. Maps
are presented in Adobe Acrobat format.
Florida was the state with the most overall housing permits (125,020), followed by
Texas (118,823) and California (92.060). The states with the fewest permits were Vermont
(2,070), Wyoming (2,192), and North Dakota (2,324).
Single-family permits for the United States totaled 1,069,472 for 1996, up 7.2% from
997,268 in 1995. By state, the highest number of permits was in Florida (91,040), followed
by Texas (83,103) and California (73,532). The lowest number of single-family permits was
in North Dakota (1,479), followed by Montana (1,494) and Wyoming (1,649).
The states with the highest percentage increase in single-family permits from 1995 were
Texas (18.0%), South Carolina (16.8%), and Nebraska (16.2%). The states with the largest
decrease in single-family permits from 1995 were Hawaii (-30.2%), Montana (-12.5%), and
Vermont (-4.0%) .
Multifamily permits totaled 356,144 in 1996, up 6.2% from 335,281 in 1995. By state,
the most multifmaily permits were in Texas (35,720), followed by Florida (33,980) and
California (18,528). The lowest number of multifamily permits was in Delaware (152),
followed by Vermont (198) and Maine (222).
The state with the highest percentage increase in multifamily starts was New Hampshire
(117.9%). Following were Colorado (93.9%) and New York (79.1%). The state with the highest
percentage decrease was Delaware (-57.3%). Following were Hawaii (-55.3%) and North Dakota
(-51.1%).
The state with the highest ratio of multifamily starts to total starts was Montana
(44.2%). Following were Nebraska (43.3%) and New York (42.1%). The state with the lowest
ratio of multifamily starts to total starts was Delaware (3.5%). Following were Maine
(4.7%) and Vermont (9.6%).
