Home Ownership Rates
The homeownership rate declined in 2010 for the sixth
straight year according to the Housing Vacancy
Survey, conducted by the US Census Bureau in conjunction with
the Current Population Survey.
The home ownership rate for 2010 was 66.9%, down from 67.4%
in 2009.
By region, home ownership in 2010 was highest in the Midwest
at 70.8%, followed by the South (69.0%), the Northeast (64.1%)
and the West (61.4%).

The state with the highest home
ownership rate in 2010 was
West Virginia (79.0%), followed by New Hampshire (74.9%) and
Mississippi/South Carolina (both at 74.8%). The state
with the lowest home ownership rate in 2009 was the District of
Columbia (45.6%), followed by New York (54.5%) and
Hawaii/California (both at 56.1%). Maps
